Position summary:

All positions in the agency exist to enhance the lives of the people we support by actively applying the agency’s mission statement.

The direct support worker positions exist to ensure the needs of the people we support are met.

The direct support worker takes direction from the management team or unionized supervisors.

Classification:

This position is a unionized position that is based out of the Juniper Centre’s day and residential programs.

 

 

Major responsibilities:

  • Direct support
    • Personal care including bathrooming, bathing, grooming, feeding, etc
    • Medication administration following JCI medication policy
    • Financial support following JCI policy
    • Transfers using adaptive equipment including lifts, slings, transfer belts, etc
    • Recreation based on people’s needs, wants, and abilities
    • Meal preparation either for or with the people we support following JCI menu plans
    • Cleaning and general maintenance of any/all JCI workplaces
  • Area specific
    • Fire and evacuation plan in each workplace
    • Locations of keys, medications, water shut-offs, electrical panels, etc
    • Person and workplace specific plans and procedures
  • Teamwork
    • Focusing on the wants and needs of the people we support to provide the quality of life they want.
    • Working with all other employees to ensure the people we support receive the quality care they deserve.
    • Working with the management team to further the goals of the agency
    • Staff meetings as needed
  • Health and Safety
    • Ensure that you are using appropriate equipment or procedures for all jobs
    • Train the people we support on safety procedures in all areas
    • Facilitate the maintenance of safety procedures in all areas
    • Following the JCI call chain and other safety protocols as needed
  • Documentation/Communication
    • Maintain all documentation to the JCI and CLDS standards (logs, contacts, reporting, incident reports, Resident filing, training documentation)
    • Communication with management team and employees through phone, email, text, and other digital mediums
  • Other duties.
    • All other duties as assigned by management 

Confidentiality:

All employees must respect and maintain the confidentiality of information related to the people we support and must comply with the Juniper Centre Inc. confidentiality agreement and all provincial or federal information protection legislation.  

Key relationships:

Works with:  The people we support, other employees, and supervisors primarily in the day and residential programs, and the community at large.

Reports to:  supervisors and managers

Direct reports:  none

Outside Agency Contacts:  Manitoba Family Services, NRHA contacts, property owners, community members, etc 

Working Conditions:

The direct support worker will primarily be working direct support in the Juniper Centre day-program, residential locations, participant homes, and the City of Thompson at large.  Various conditions may include:

  • Working alone
  • Working outdoors in both heat and cold
  • Attending medical facilities
  • Attending recreational facilities 

Physical requirements:

The direct support worker provides both supervision and direct support.  Physical needs of the supervisor’s tasks may require:

  • Sitting for long periods
  • Driving
  • Lifting over 50 lbs (groceries, filing, etc)
  • Assisting with two person lifts or with mechanical lifts for the people we support
  • Outdoor tasks like shovelling, etc.
  • Recreation activities with the people we support as needed 

Key Capabilities and Requirements.  Competencies/qualifications:

  • Conditions of service:
    • Clear criminal records check
    • Adult abuse registry check
    • Current first aid certification
    • In force drivers license
